Since we are growing indoors we make use of artificial light to make our crops grow strong and beautiful. However the very same condition, the fact that we grow vertically indoors and are able to control the farm environment, also allows us to grow much more efficiently than traditional outdoor farms.
So yes, at the moment we do use more electricity to power our lights than what is needed out on the fields. But the fact that we grow in Sweden enables us to almost entirely rely on renewable energy and we reuse the excess heat to warm up the surrounding building making the overall energy use more efficient. Also, the techniques we use in the industry develop by the day, indicating that we’ve only seen the beginning of efficiency improvements - which hopefully will lead to significant decrease of electricity used per kilo of tasty greens.
